Nail surgery can be daunting. All safety precautions are in place for your care at the Nuffield Exeter podiatry clinic. A qualified nurse will always be present at your side to take care of any needs you may have, be that just giving you a blanket, a drink of water or chatting to put you at ease.
When you arrive the reception team will direct you to take a seat and you will be able to help yourself to complimentary tea and coffee. During the initial consultation your specialist will ask about your problem and determine a diagnosis and the best treatment plan for you. General medical history will be taken at the initial appointment and any questions you have will be answered, providing you with all of the information you need to help you decide whether minor surgery is the right step for you. You will be given a single point of contact and a direct dial number should you have any questions.

What is a local anaesthetic?
It is an injection that is given to numb an area
Will the nail surgery hurt?
The toe is numb so there is no pain but you will be aware of movement and pressure
Will you take private medical insurance?
Please check with the individual insurance company to ensure that the procedure will be paid for before booking the appointment
Can I go back to work after the procedure?
Rest is necessary after the procedure and the foot needs to be elevated for the rest of the day
How long does it take to heal?
The surgical site on average takes eight weeks for complete healing
What dressings should I use?
All of the dressings will be provided as part of the care package
Can I bring headphones?
Personal headphones can be used during the procedure
I am really nervous about having the procedure done, what can you do to help?
If you are experiencing anxiety about the procedure please discuss this at your initial appointment where the specialist will offer suggestions to help
Will it bleed?
There is normally minimal blood loss after the procedure
Will it hurt afterwards?
It may feel like a dull ache after the surgical procedure when the local anaesthetic has worn off and it may be necessary to take some painkillers
When will my toe be dressed?
The dressing will be changed the day after the surgery and at regular intervals until it is healed
Can I wear normal shoes?
On the day of the surgery after the procedure a shoe with an open toe must be used as a bulky bandage will be in place. After the first dressing most normal shoes can be worn provided that they do not squash the toe
Will the nail look normal after the surgery?
The aesthetic result is excellent and the nail plate is slightly narrower after the surgery
Do I have to pay for the dressing appointments?
No the nail surgery comes as a package and all dressings and dressing appointments are included
